Easter in Kalymnos 2004 (on 11th April)

Easter in Kalymnos is celebrated with particular splendour.

The preparations begin many days before the feast. When Holy Week comes everything is ready. The houses are painted, the courtyards are spotless, the gardens are full of flowers.

There is a service in the churches both in the mornings and evenings with a large congregation.

Very beautiful and particularly  scenic, are the monasteries in the small villages of the island (Arginonta).

Holy Saturday is a day of intense activity and movement. Everybody gets ready for the next day. The traditional ovens are lit and  you can see smoke everywhere. The families gather.

 The women prepare the mououri.

The mououri is lamb stuffed with rice, red sauce and many spices.

This speciality took its name from the earthen container in which the lamb is cooked in the oven.

The mououri is a deep, round, earthen container with a lid exclusively manufactured in Kalymnos and is used for the baking of the traditional lamb at Easter.

The dish is delicious and is served in a lot of restaurants throughout the year.

If you decide to visit Kalymnos at Easter, an impressively dynamic surprise

will be expecting you on Easter Sunday !!!
